Canada's Badlands

One of the best things about the Drumheller Valley is that it never truly has an off-season. It just changes outfits. Sometimes it is snow-dusted hoodoos, cozy theatres, and warm cafés. Sometimes it is blooming cactuses, canyon hikes, and long river walks. Sometimes it is festival lights, live music, roaring engines, or long summer nights downtown. No matter when you show up, something is happening, and chances are, it is something you did not even know you were looking for.

Drumheller Events

In 1911, the Newcastle Mine hauled its first load of coal by wheelbarrow, sparking the Drumheller Valley’s Great Coal Rush. By 1926, more than a dozen mines ran at full capacity, and twelve thousand migrants lived in hastily built camps along the Red Deer River Valley, including Newcastle, Midland, Rosedale, Rosedeer, Excelsior, and Arcadia.
